Delightful Things You Never Knew About Tea Tree Essential Oil

If the words ‘tea tree’ don’t really mean anything to you, boy oh boy, have you been missing out! Tea tree oil, the essential oil derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant native to Australia, has long been touted as a miracle ingredient because of its naturally antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. It’s also one of our favorite scents, giving our tea tree body butter and lotion sticks an invigorating and refreshing fragrance!

The earliest reported medicinal use of the tea tree plant was by the Bundjalung, a tribe of aboriginal Australians. They crushed the leaves and inhaled the minty smell of the oil to cure coughs and healed minor skin wounds by applying a poultice of crushed tea tree leaves. Aboriginal Australian lore even notes healing lagoons created from masses of tea tree leaves falling into the water and decaying over time.

Melaleuca alternifolia became the ‘tea tree’ after Captain James Cook observed the Bundjalung tribe using the leaves to prepare a healing tea. It has also been reported that his men used the leaves both to make a tea and brew beer! This may sound tempting, but it should be noted that while fantastic results can be seen with topical use, ingesting tea tree oil can be toxic and is highly discouraged.

It wasn’t until the 1920s when a government chemist named Arthur Penfold began studying and publishing reports on the efficacy of tea tree oil as a natural treatment for skin ailments that tea tree began to get some well deserved attention and notoriety. It became so important that the military kits of Australian soldiers were stocked with tea tree oil during World War II.

These days, tea tree oil hasn’t lost any of its punch, and can be found in a variety of skin care products from anti-dandruff shampoos to acne solutions to body and face creams.
